Introduction: Diabetes-related Ketoacidosis (DKA) is a commonly-encountered acute endocrine emergency requiring prompt recognition and treatment. DKA is triggered by risk factors that are often preventable. There are limited studies evaluating the precipitating causes of DKA and depicting their trends over the years. The latter is important in the prevention of DKA by ensuring appropriate education and interventions.Aim: To study the trends of aetiologie...

Introduction: Diabetes related ketoacidosis (DKA) is usually associated with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). However, DKA is increasingly being recognised in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). We studied the differences in prevalence and precipitating factors of DKA between T1DM and T2DM.Methods: This retrospective study included all DKA episodes from January to November 2021 in six hospitals in the West Midlands, UK. DKA was diagnosed as serum glucose&#8...

Background: Serious complications of diabetes-related ketoacidosis (DKA) and its management with fixed rate insulin infusion (FRIII) include hypoglycaemia, hyperkalaemia and hypokalaemia. Revised Joint British Diabetes Societies for Inpatient Care (JBDS) guidelines in July 2021 recommended a reduced rate FRIII of 0.05 units/kg/hour from 0.1 units/kg/hour once blood glucose levels fall to ≤14.0 mmol/l to alleviate the risk of these complications.Aim...

A Quality Improvement initiative to assess differences of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) management across hospitals in the United Kingdom

Dalzell Joseph , Skaria Maria , Kauser-Malik Saima , Raghavan Rajeev , Soghal Shamanth , Tabasum Maria , Ahmed Nabeel , Nizza Jael , Acharya Jayashekara , Saraf Sanjay , Dekode Team

Background: Joint British Diabetes Societies (JBDS) have developed guidelines for the treatment and management of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) in adults in the United Kingdom (UK). Multiple single center audits are known to assess compliance to guidelines. However, unified data on DKA management across multiple centers is unknown.Aims: To study the precipitating factors and assess for differences in DKA management across UK hospitals.<p class="abstext...

Introduction: Joint British Diabetes Societies Inpatient (JBDS-IP) recommended reducing fixed-rate intravenous insulin infusion (FRIII) rate to 0.05units/kg/hr when blood glucose falls <14 mmol/l to avoid hypoglycaemia during diabetes-related ketoacidosis (DKA).Aim: We studied the impact of guideline change on complications and outcomes of DKA.Methods: We included all DKA episo...
